Proposed Jail Election

There will be a special election held in Cross County on April 9, 2019, regarding the Cross County Jail. There are two separate issues on the ballot. One is a 0.875% (7/8th cent) sales tax for the construction of a new jail and the second issue is for a 0.125% (1/8th cent) sales tax for the maintenance and operation of the jail.

Each of the two issues stands alone. One can be passed and initiated regardless of the outcome of the other. This means that a new jail can be constructed without including resources for the maintenance of the new jail. Also, a tax authorizing maintenance of the jail can be passed which will provide for the operation of the current jail without constructing a new jail.

The tax for construction of the jail will cease to be collected after the bonds for the payment of the jail have been paid off.

The tax for maintenance and operation is a permanent tax.

If passed, collection of the new tax(es) will begin on October 1, 2019.
